Dear Parents of the Class of 2012,
DUAL ENROLLMENT INFORMATION for 2011-2012
Since your student will have opportunities as seniors that they have not had before, here is some information to assist you in
deciding what might be beneficial to your upcoming senior.
Dual Enrollment Classes offered at CA and requirements:
1. Earth Science: Must have a 3.0 G.P.A. to be eligible for dual enrollment. Textbooks are extra and are purchased
through SAU’s Campus Shop. Tuition is billed at $300 during first semester (*TN Hope Scholarship Dual Enrollment
Grant is $300). College credit may be transferred to other colleges. The transcript request must be sent to SAU by the
student and an official copy sent from SAU to the other institution.
NOTE: Earth Science is a good general ed. class for non-science majors. If your student is planning on a scientific
major in college, Earth Science may or may not be a good choice since science requirements will be met within the
major field. Earth Science equals 3 hours of college credit and 1 science credit at CA.
2. Listening to Music: Must have a 3.0 G.P.A. to be eligible for dual enrollment—class may be taken as dual or non-dual
enrollment class. Textbooks are extra (whether for dual credit or not) and are purchased through SAU’s Campus Shop.
Tuition is billed at $300 during second semester only. College credit may be transferred to other colleges. The
transcript request must be sent to SAU by the student and an official copy sent from SAU to the other institution.
NOTE: Music majors may or may not get to use this towards their major. Petitions must be made for that with SAU.
Listening to Music equals 3 hours of college credit and 1 fine arts credit at CA.
3. Composition 101 & 102 (first semester, second semester): Must have a 3.0 G.P.A. to be eligible for dual enrollment
PLUS students MUST HAVE ACT scores:
a. English ACT score of 23
b. Reading ACT score of 23 OR a TCAP Writing score of 5-6.
c. Previous English grades must be a B+ average
Class is only taught as dual enrollment. Seniors who take Comp. are essentially skipping a year of English since they
will not take English IV. Textbooks are extra and are purchased through SAU’s Campus Shop. Tuition is billed at $300
each semester. College credit may be transferred to other colleges. The transcript request must be sent to SAU by
the student and an official copy sent from SAU to the other institution. Some select colleges/universities have been
known to deny credit. If your student is planning on a certain college/university, you should check that school’s
requirements. Composition 101 & 102 equals 3 hours each and .5 English credit each semester at CA.
A note about ACT testing: If your student does not take the ACT in April at CA or does not get the scores required, re-
testing may be done at SAU or other places. However, the test offered at SAU is a non-national test. This means that
the results will be shared with CA, but not transferable to another college. Only national testing dates are
transferable. This rule also applies to the TN Hope Scholarship since only national test date scores may be used to
qualify for the scholarship. See www.actstudent.org for a list of national test dates. SAU’s residual test dates are
available by calling the Student Success Center at 236-2782. Re-take scores must be available before registration in
August at CA.
4. Pre-Calculus: The class prerequisites require satisfactory completion of Algebra I, II, and Geometry. A challenge exam
for each semester is available at SAU in the spring for college credit.
5. Calculus: This class is taught at an Advanced Placement (AP) level. Algebra I, II, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus are
required prerequisites. The AP test is administered in May. Check your college/university of choice for the test score
required for college credit.
6. Classes off campus: Seniors must have 6 classes each semester of the senior year. However, class #6 may be taken
off campus if a senior wants to take a college class. Off campus classes must be scheduled without conflicts in the
regular CA schedule. Evidence of the course registration must be presented to CA. Students are billed directly for
these classes and CA accounts are not involved.
*Dual Enrollment Scholarships
The Tennessee Hope Scholarship (TSAC—TN Student Assistance Corp.) offers $300 per semester to qualifying seniors for dual
enrollment. Forms are filled out entirely online via the Hope Scholarship web site (www.tn.gov/collegepays) and must be
completed at the beginning of each semester to receive the scholarship. The $300 is awarded per class. Dual Enrollment
grant/scholarship eligible courses at CA:
1. Earth Science (taught all year, billed first semester)
2. Listening to Music (taught all year, billed second semester)
3. Composition 101 (taught and billed first semester only)
4. Composition 102 (taught and billed second semester only)
Billing for CA Dual Enrollment Courses
SAU bills Collegedale Academy for the dual enrollment class(es) usually in November and March of the respective semesters.
The charges are then added to the student’s CA account. Dual enrollment scholarship funds are then sent to SAU by TSAC and
credits are transferred from SAU to CA and appear on CA accounts a few months later. There can be a 2+ month lag between
billing and dual enrollment scholarship crediting of accounts. Remember, if a student is taking two dual enrollment courses,
only one course/fee will have dual enrollment money credited to it.
Course Registration at CA:
Course selections for 2011-2012 will be underway within the next week. Students will be given check sheets and cumulative
information to review and help with course selection. Course selection will take place within small groups for the Class of 2012
for better individualized attention. If any student has questions or concerns about classes for next year, he/she is most
welcome to ask either myself or Mr. Djernes and we will be happy to help. The Power School portal will stay open until June.
Note: If a student is interested in taking Composition, but does not yet know if he/she qualifies, that student should select
Comp. 101 and 102 for their English choice in Power School. Then if he/she does not qualify, that student will automatically be
re-assigned to English IV for next year.
I hope that you will find this information helpful in making choices for the 2011-2012 school year.
Sincerely,
Kerre Conerly
